They're meant as a safeguard from splashing and accidental submersion - Not intentional (ie swimming). In fact, Samsung themselves do state the device is not recommended for swimming. Here's what I've read on Samsung's website: - Chlorinated water and salt water are OK. Just rise the Galaxy Watch in fresh water when you're done. - You can swim with it, you just can't scuba dive Samsung Gear S3: Software. The Gear S3 is not waterproof. It is water resistant, and has an IP68 rating on it. Here's a great chart for what those rating numbers mean - http://www.dsmt.com/resources/ip-rating-chart/. I believe the watch itself is up to 5m for a short period of time, so you may want to be careful.
