Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the village of Groot-Zundert in the province of North Brabant in the southern Netherlands. He was the oldest surviving son of Theodorus van Gogh, a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Today marks the 167th anniversary of Vincent Van Gogh’s birth.
The museum’s collection is the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings in the world. The museum opened on 2 June 1973. The history of the Van Gogh Museum’s architecture is an interesting one. The main building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, opened in 1973. Architect Kisho Kurokawa’s exhibition wing was completed in 1999.

Dr. Paul Gachet, the amateur artist and doctor in whose care Vincent Van Gogh spent his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, made several drawings of the deceased painter following his suicide, on which he based this print. It is a somber counterpart to the lively etched portrait of Gachet made by Van Gogh only weeks earlier (2021.243).
The lifelessness of the skeleton represented the very opposite of what van Gogh wanted a picture to express. With the burning cigarette jammed in its teeth, the skeleton, though still nothing but dead bones, has acquired a grotesquely funny hint of life.
